How to Get Traffic to Your Website and Increase Sales for Your Business

When setup properly your website should serve as a 24/7 salesperson for your business. If you are not promoting your website properly, though, it is not going to contribute to your success. If you want your website to drive more sales for your business, you need to increase website traffic and improve conversion rates.

In order to boost conversions, you need to have highly targeted traffic and search marketing is the best way to find and attract traffic that is targeted and ready to convert. Below we are going to discuss how to identify targeted keywords and how to use that information to develop a strategy for increasing your online visibility and sales.

Putting Your Brand In Front of the RIGHT Customers

If your business is going to be successful you need to have a great product or service complimented with great customer service. Having those in place won’t do much good if people do not know what you are offering though.

Traditionally, if you wanted to reach a new group of people you would have to broadcast your message to as many people as possible, just hoping to stumble upon someone who may be interested in what you offer. If you are thinking there has to be a better way, you are correct. Untargeted traffic is more expensive and has a lower conversion rate! The solution is search marketing which will attract highly targeted traffic to your website.

Online marketing has changed how your message can be shared. The benefit of this is reduced marketing costs and higher conversion rates. Think about it, you are only paying to advertise to someone actively searching for what you have to offer. At that point, it becomes a matter of having a great product or service, not just hoping to connect with potential customers.

Your website is a key component of this equation though. You must have a website that highlights what you have to offer and prompts visitors to take action with you. Like your product or service, even the best website will do little to help you if people are not being exposed to it which is why you must have a plan in place to get traffic to your website. If you don’t have a plan in place just yet, here is what you need to consider when formulating one.

How are People Searching for What I’m Offering?

In order for your business to be a success, you need to offer a solution. Your product or service could solve a big or small problem, but it must solve one. The first thing you must do in developing your search marketing campaign is to find out how people are searching. This is known as keyword discovery or keyword selection. Not long ago I shared a full write-up on Website Magazine about keyword discovery that will thoroughly walk you through the process.

Does My Site Contain Content that Educates and Solves Problems?

Once you identify how people search for what you offer, you need to look at the pages on your site and decide which query best matches the page, if any. When you find search phrases not covered on your site, you can add additional pages or blog posts to ensure that you are offering the information people are looking for.

Here is an example.

Let’s say that you offer SEO and a few other online marketing services. One of the most common questions people ask and search for is “how to get more traffic to my website?”. While on this blog I talk about SEO and other services, I did not answer that specific question until this post. For those of you with more SEO knowledge, you know this post is targeting a long tail keyword. Either way, a lack of website traffic is a common problem among website owners and this post offers insight into how to gain additional traffic to your website. Pretty simple stuff…right?

How Well Does My Content Address the Problems of the Searcher?

Have you ever clicked the top several results after doing a search only to find that the answers before you are outdated, incomplete, or just plain wrong? If not, consider yourself lucky. If you have found yourself in that boat, the content you are reading probably ranks highly because of a strong link building campaign. If you want to learn how to get back links, you can do so in my complete link building guide. Without question, links play a major role in how well your content ranks but they do little to drive conversions. Taking the extra time and effort to craft in-depth content that provides unique and actionable insights will help you keep visitors on your site longer thereby increasing the likelihood of turning them into a customer. The best way to make sure your content is informative is to ask a few friends who are not familiar with the topic to review it for you.

Putting Growth Into Action with Content Promotion

As we touched on above, inferior content can often claim the top several search results on Google. Again, this has to do with link building and/or the authority of the site hosting the content. Since you are going to take the extra time to make sure your content genuinely solves problems, getting some inbound links can be accomplished with outreach link building. I covered outreach link building in great detail over on Website Magazine for those of you not familiar with what it is or how to do it. In addition to link building you should also seek to promote your content socially. This will result in referral traffic from social sites and can lead to some naturally generated links to your site as well.

Is It Really that Hard to Get More Website Traffic?

Building a high-traffic site can be a ton of work. If you don’t have much time to set aside, you should really look into hiring someone to assist with content development, link building, and promotion. If on the other hand, you do have ample time to set aside, you can certainly learn several great tips and use those to create more traffic for your website.
